Ensemble Sospeso is an artistic organization committed to the forward evolution of live concert performance in the United States and throughout the world. Using visionary models of concert giving, innovative collaborations, and an unwavering commitment to the establishment of new relationships between cultural producers and audiences, Sospeso seeks to communicate a rich understanding of our inherited musical and artistic traditions.
Since making its Carnegie Hall debut in 1998, Ensemble Sospeso has repeatedly asserted itself as a major player in the New York music scene. Sospeso has given dozens of performances nationwide, including appearances at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center (with Pierre Boulez in a critically acclaimed retrospective of his music), Carnegie Hall’s Making Music series (under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen), Zankel Hall, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Lincoln Center Festival, Weill Recital Hall and the Miller Theatre at Columbia University.
Awarded the prestigious Förderpreis from the Ernst von Siemens Foundation’s Musikstiftung for two consecutive years, Sospeso performs an unusually diverse repertoire, and is one of few ensembles in the United States to regularly perform large chamber and orchestral works of our time.
In part through collaborations with poets, painters, filmmakers, dancers and other artists, Sospeso seeks to reimagine what live performance means to us: to performers, to audiences, and to society. A recent example of this reimagining includes fifteen performances of Guy Maddin’s film, “Brand Upon the Brain” at the New York Film Festival, with a score by Jason Staczek and live narration by Isabella Rossellini.
Sospeso’s commitment to interdisciplinary projects has found its expression in collaborations involving filmmakers such as Hal Hartley, Werner Herzog, and Nicholas Roeg; poets such as John Ashbery and Michel Deguy; museums such as the Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art; and other institutions, including IRCAM.
