Composer and Artist Biographies

Victor Adán

Victor Adán has been interested in music, visual arts, and computer programming since childhood. His first musical experiments took place in the late 1980s, when his parents acquired an upright piano and a personal computer. Adán treated both as musical instruments. In 1997, he joined composer Julio Estradas Music Creation Lab at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. In 2005, he earned an MS in media technology and digital communications from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and in 2010 a DMA from Columbia University.

The Argento Chamber Ensemble

The Argento Chamber Ensemble is the performance arm of the Argento New Music Project. Founded in 2000 to perform compositions embodying pressing concerns in Western music, Argento consists of 9 core members and regularly expands to up to 30 musicians. Argento has toured widely in the US and abroad, and has worked closely with leading contemporary composers. Argento has recorded the music of Tristan Murail on the Aeon label; Phonus (2009), a CD of music by Parisian spectral composer Philippe Hurel, is produced by Soupir Editions and Plus Loin Music and distributed by Harmonia Mundi. This August, Argento will inaugurate Lunar Movements, a weekly series of contemporary music exploring the legacy of Schoenbers Pierrot Lunaire.

Ed Campion

A native of Dallas, Texas, Edmund Campion did doctoral work in composition at Columbia University and attended the Paris Conservatory where he worked with composer Gérard Grisey. In 1993 he was selected to work at IRCAM where he composed Losing Touch (Billaudot Editions, Paris) and was subsequently commissioned to write a large-scale piece for interactive electronics and MIDI grand piano. The resulting Natural Selection received its premiere with the composer at the piano in 1996. After his return from Paris, Campion joined the composition faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is also Co-Director at the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies. Many of Campions works explore the relationships between sound and space—explorations that combine cutting-edge technology with sheer imagination.


Together flutist Erin Lesser and percussionist Greg Byer make up DUE EAST. Ms. Lesser has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Canada, Europe, China, Brazil, and the US. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the Manhattan School of Music and a Pearl Flute performing artist. Percussionist Greg Byer, Assistant Professor of Composition at the Northern Illinois University, specializes in repertoire that places non-western instruments into the context of contemporary musical thought. DUE EAST won first prize in the 2008 National Flute Association Chamber Music Competition and actively promotes new music.

Christian Fennesz

Christian Fennesz (often credited simply as Fennesz) uses guitar and computer to create shimmering, swirling electronic sound of enormous range and complex musicality. His lush and luminant compositions are anything but sterile computer experiments. They resemble sensitive, telescopic recordings of rainforest insect life or natural atmospheric occurrences, an inherent naturalism permeating each piece. Fennesz is published by Touch Music; he lives and works in Vienna and Paris.

Georg Friedrich Haas

Born in 1953, Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas is an experimenter with sound. His extraordinary approach to sonority creates beautiful and opalescent soundscapes as he explores micro-intervals and pure overtones in his music.

JACK Quartet

Comprising violinists Christopher Otto and Ari Streisfeld, violist John Pickford Richards, and cellist Kevin McFarland, the JACK Quartet is focused on the commissioning and performance of new works.

Bernhard Lang

Composer Bernhard Lang teaches music theory, harmony, and counterpoint at the University of Music and dramatic Arts in Graz, where he has held a professorship in composition since 2003. His pieces have been performed at the Steirische Herbst Festival, at the Moscow Alternativa Festival and the Moscow Modern Festival, Biennale Hannover, Tage Absoluter Musik Allentsteig I and II, Klangarten I and IV, Resistance Fluctuation Los Angeles, Darmstädter Ferienkurse, Salzburger Festspiele, Wien Modern, Donaueschingen, Witten, and many others. His current artistic interests derive from his interpretation of the ideas of difference and repetition.

Soap and Skin

Austrian alternative singer/songwriter Anja Plaschg made her critically acclaimed album debut as Soap & Skin in 2009. Born in 1990, in Gnas, Austria, and raised on a pig farm, Plaschg began writing and performing music on piano as a teenager and went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. She made her commercial recording debut with an eponymous four-track EP. At age 18, she released her debut album, Lovetune for Vacuum, on the Pias Recordings label. Consisting of songs written between 2005 and 2008, Lovetune for Vacuum spawned a pair of hit singles ("Spiracle," "Mr. Gaunt Pt. 1000") and reached the Top Five on the albums chart in Austria. Reviews of Lovetune for Vacuum have compared Plaschg to female singer/songwriters such as Cat Power, Nico, Kate Bush, and Björk.

Steven Takasugi

Born 1960 in Los Angeles, Steven Takasugi has studied composition with Noah Creshevsky, Bunita Marcus, Morton Feldman, Brian Ferneyhough, Joji Yuasa and Roger Reynolds (chair), as well as computer music with Charles Dodge, F. Richard Moore, and Harold Cohen. He received his Masters and doctoral degrees in composition from the University of California, San Diego. His work has been presented worldwide, and he is the recipient of numerous awards, including a 2010 Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. Takasugi currently teaches composition at Harvard University and is Managing Director of the Harvard Summer Master Courses in New Music Composition. He is one of the founding editors of Search Journal for New Music and Culture, a peer-reviewed journal with an emphasis on new music composition
