LITERARY CONTEST: A Bohemian State of Mind As the Earth Stands Still

Czech Center New York is announcing an open call for short story/personal essay submissions by undergraduate and graduate students of Czech Studies at U.S. universities, addressing the theme: A Bohemian State of Mind as the Earth Stands Still.

The Czech Center New York hopes to encourage university students in the U.S. in their creative writing endeavors and hope to highlight new literary works that are being written under these “standstill” circumstances and which incorporate the author’s creative take on certain "Czech" aspects (be it the Czech mindset or through Czech literary or cultural allusions).

Deadline: June 15, 2020
Maximum word count: 3,000
Language: English

Send submissions to: info@czechcenter.com. Subject line: A Bohemian State of Mind – Submission. Attach your submission in DOC/PDF format. In your email, please include your university affiliation, major, and a short bio.

Jury: Christopher Harwood (Columbia University), Tereza Novická (Czech Center New York), Veronika Tuckerová (Harvard University), Alex Zucker (translator)

Important: Do not include your name in the submitted short story document to ensure an impartial judging!

An uninvolved staff member of Czech Center New York will keep track of submissions and respective authors.

Three short stories/personal essays will be selected as winners by the jury. The winning stories/essays will be published on the Czech Center New York website along with the authors’ bios, and the winning authors will receive a book prize and be invited to a dinner with the jury at the Bohemian Spirit Restaurant at the Bohemian National Hall in New York (date TBD, travel expenses will not be covered).

The winners will be announced on June 30, 2020 on the Czech Center New York website and social media.
