St. John of Nepomuk at The Met

The current exhibition "Painted in Mexico" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art is devoted to the painting of Mexico during the eighteenth century, including two Saint John of Nepomuk paintings. John of Nepomuk, Patron Saint of Bohemia, was tortured and drowned in the Vltava river in 1393. Hundreds of years later, in 1729, he was canonized by pope Benedict XIII. There is also the Church of St. John Nepomucene in Manhattan, which is situated on the corner of 66th Street and 1st Avenue.

On view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art until July 22, 2018.
