Jan Palach

Remembering Jan Palach, who died 50 years ago in January 1969.

Jan Palach is a historical fim that focuses on one of the crucial milestones of the modern Czechoslovak history – the self-immolation of Jan Palach. The story revolves around this painfully striking protest against the Soviet invasion in 1968 and debates the preceding thoughts of its sole actor. Jan Palach was 20 years old when he immolated himself on January 16, 1969 on the Wenceslas Square in Prague. Described as an empathetic boy with a sharp sense for justice, Jan didn’t confide in anyone about his intention – his mother, his girlfriend Helena or his friends. The film zooms in on Jan’s face and tries to detect the origins of his quiet decision.
