A CELEBRATION OF THE MUSIC OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC

On Monday, 6 May 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the Lang Recital Hall of Hunter College a performance of the music of Czechoslovakia by an ensemble under the direction of Dr. Petra Gelbart. The Lang Recital Hall is at 695 Park Avenue (enter at south side of 69th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues) on the fourth floor. The music presented will include expressions from the Romani, Czech, and Slovak traditions. Following the concert there will be discussion with Dr. Gelbart and Dr. Jurkova.

The concert will be followed on Thursday, 9 May 2019 at 6:00 p.m.  in the North Building of Hunter College Room 405 by the 2019 Distinguished Lecture in Ethnomusicology presented by Dr. Zuzana Jurkova, Director of the Ethnomusicology Institute at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. Dr. Jurkova’s lecture title “Minorities’ Musics Matter: Studies of Romani Music in the Czech Republic”.  A renowned scholar internationally, Dr. Jurkova is the author of Romani Music at  the Turn of the Millenium and To Touch the World: Czech Musical Alternatives 1968-2012 (with B. Maderova).

These programs celebrate the music of the Czech Republic and are presented by the Hunter College Graduate Program in Ethnomusicology in cooperation with The Association of Cultural Equity and the Czech Cultural Center in New York.  They are free and open to the public.
