A Non-stop Reading Marathon

June 1, 2004, Czech Center New York

This year, the Czech Center New York will participate in the seventh incarnation of the Non-stop Reading Marathon collaboratively organized by the Administration of Czech Centers in Prague and the Jazz Section–Artforum.  This year’s theme, as declared by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Cyril Svoboda, is “Neighbor Relations” [Sousedske vztahy] – a provocative call upon our consciousness. Reading will begin in Prague on May 27 and will continue at the Czech Centers around the world, concluding on June 1st at the Czech Center New York. During this period, readers in Prague and other cities around the world will be connected via the Internet through a live webcast at www.nonstopczech.cz. So please join us online.

The first edition of the Non-stop Reading Marathon in 1998 was devoted to the American author Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The following years were dedicated to Alexander Solzenitzyn (1999), Josef Škvorecký and Zdena Salivarová (2000).  The fourth edition celebrated  the Jazz Section’s 30 years in existence; the following year the Non-stop Reading lasted nine full days without interruption. The sixth, last year’s, edition was dedicated to Václav Havel. This year’s edition of the Non-stop Reading Marathon is produced under the auspices of Cyril Svoboda, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Jiří Gruša, President of the International PEN Club.
