Czech comedy would not exist without the outsize contribution of director Oldřich Lipský who devoted his entire career to the genre. For this film, he again teamed up with screenwriter Jiří Brdečka, who just like for their previous film LEMONADE JOE, came up with the idea. Both films are inspired by Brdečka’s love of American pulp fiction. The result is a hilarious freewheeling parody on the theme. From New York to Prague, the renowned private detective Nick Carter comes to help the Czech police commissar Ledvina to solve a mysterious disappearance at the mansion of Countess Thun. The grotesque duo scours the streets of turn-of-the-century Prague in search of the villain and cultivator of a music-loving, flesh-eating plant, Adela (created for the film by none other than Jan Švankmajer). In a stark contrast with the politically dire times, the film offered a repose from reality and a platform for some of the best artists in the field. No wonder the National Film Archive recently digitally restored the film – and both online sources feature the film in this restored version.

The Czech culture and language, creating subtitles and much more will be discussed with Alex Zucker, a translator par excellence from the Czech in the post-screening ZOOM Q&A.

This event is part of the film series LIGHT STREAMING. Check out the other featured film screenings and Q&A’s taking place from April 23 to May 14 every Thursday HERE.
