Aleksandra Vajd & Hynek Alt: You Look Like I Look, 2004-2005
Exhibition at the Czech Center. Opening: May 17, 6:30-7:30. On view through June 10.
In the project "You Look Like I Look", Aleksandra Vajd and Hynek Alt place a translucent mask of an anonymous jolly man over various faces in an attempt to question the difference between two speculated identities: the genuine and natural, and the artificial and applied.
They have created a situation where both the mask and the person behind it coexist visually. Real features fall in the background, yet
the new surface created by the mask does not veil the person's essential expression. Instead, the mask dramatically modifies it. The project illustrates the particular experience of a foreigner entering
American society, while simultaneously addressing the wider social and anthropological implications of dual identity.
The exhibit has been organized as a joint project of the Czech Center New York, Consulate General of Slovenia and the Institute of International Education to recognize the importance and value of the Fulbright Scholarship.
Hynek Alt, Czech Republic and Aleksandra Vajd, Slovenia, are both winners of the 2004 Fulbright Scholarship.
