EAST GERMAN SHORTS ON ARTISTS FORCED TO FLEE THE NAZIS

Curated by DEFA Foundation, 1962-1988, 102 min, GDR

A selection of five short films produced in East Germany that feature prominent artists in exile from the Nazis. Original interviews with the artists, close family members, and friends are combined with little-known historic film material.

The selected films for this screening include the following titles:

  • Arnold Zweig (Joop Huisken, 1962, 19 min) 
  • Leo Haas: Artist and Witness of His Times (Jörg d'Bomba, 1971, 13 min)
  • Walter Ballhause: One Among Millions (Karlheinz Mund, 1982, 21 min)
  • Do You Know Where Herr Kisch Is? (Eduard Schreiber, 1985, 19 min)
  • Erich Fried: The Whole World Should Endure (Roland Steiner, 1988, 30min)
