BARBORA KLÍMOVÁ

REPLACED – BRNO – 2006

Exhibition at the Czech Center

January 24 – March 7

Opening reception: January 24, 6:30 pm

Barbora Klimova (1977) presents the project REPLACED – BRNO – 2006, in which she reenacted five performances by five Czech artists.

A criteria for the selection of the performances to be reenacted was foremost that the original performance took place – or could have taken place – in public space. Gestures or events identifiable through their obviousness, bordering on normal acceptable behavior, suited

her intentions rather than composed works. Replacing previously recorded gestures into a completely altered reality, the author attempts to reflect the transformation cities in the Czech

Republic have gone through during the past decades. The project was awarded the Jindrich Chalupecky Prize in 2006.

For her presentation at the Czech Center New York, Kimová has updated the concept, she deals generally with the transplantation and transformation of a symbol in different contexts.

Vladimir Ambros, a rather neglected figure involved in Czech performance of the 70s and 80s, is a special guest of this exhibition.

The photographic archive, part of which visitors to the Czech Center may view, is exhibited for the very first time.
