BLACK PETER (1963)

Director: Miloš Forman

Run Time: 86 min.

Origin: Czechoslovakia

The essence of an ordinary summer in a small Czech town in the early 1960s is told through the life of a 16-year-old boy that cares more about fun and lust rather than work.

Screening introduced by Michal Bregant, General Director of the National Film Archive, Prague, Czech Republic.

Forman's charming feature debut finds the signatures of his early work (improvisational scenes, non-professional actors) already in place, in a film which observes the sweet summer months in a small town and the frustration of a put-upon teenager (Ladislav Jakim) employed nabbing supermarket shoplifters, spending his downtime poolside, desperately dreaming of escaping what he believes is a provincial purgatory.
