International Books & Roses Day

Join the Catalan Institute of America for a literary crawl through Brooklyn’s DUMBO community in celebration of La Diada de Sant Jordi, also known as “International Books & Roses Day” and UNESCO’s “World Book Day.”

The event, which will highlight literature in translation, will take place in partnership with four local bookshops on Saturday, April 26 and will consist of a series of short 20-minute bilingual readings from Polish, Czech, Portuguese, Spanish and Catalan texts in English translation.

Stop 1: 1:00-1:30pm Melville House Books—Alex Zucker reads Jáchym Topol, Ross Ufberg reads  Marek Hłasko 
Stop 2: 1:45pm-2:15pm Berl’s Poetry Shop—Alina Gregorian reads from Armenian poets, Rowan Ricardo Phillips reads _The Ground_ with Catalan translations by Melcion Mateu 
Stop 3: 2:30pm-3pm P.S. Bookshop—Margaret B. Carson reads Sergio Chejpec, Eric Becker reads Mia Couto
Stop 4: 3:15pm-4pm powerHouse Arena—Rowan Ricardo Phillips reads Salvador Espriu, Mary Ann Newman reads Josep Carner, and a special guest will read Josep Pla’s _The Gray Notebook_. With musical accompaniment by Albert Marquès and Gianna Gagliardi, jazz duet.

There will also be a designated section of translated works on sale in all of the stores; customers who purchase books from those sections will be able to purchase roses at $1 each from the Catalan Institute of America, in collaboration.
(Roses will be available for $3 each to those who do not purchase a book.)
