Chicago International Film Festival

This year, the Chicago International Film Festival will, among others, introduce two very much talked about Czech films – the documentary Forman vs. Forman and the war drama The Painted Bird by director Václav Marhoul, who will visit the festival in person.

FORMAN VS. FORMAN – SAT 10/19 11:30 AM
Czech Republic/ France • Director: Jakub Hejna & Helena Třeštíková • 78m • Czech, English with subtitles

This illuminating documentary about two-time Academy Award winner Miloš Forman shows the director overcoming oppressive systems – the Nazi and Communist regimes in his native Czechoslovakia and, finally, Hollywood. This depiction of Forman’s creative and political struggles lets the viewer observe him from a new, unseen angle.

This film is selected for the International Documentary Competition.

THE PAINTED BIRD - WED 10/23 8:30 PM, THU 10/24 5:15PM

Czech Republic/ Ukraine/ Slovakia • Director: Václav Marhoul • 169m • Czech, German, Russian, Slavic Esperanto with subtitles

Director Václav Marhoul will make a special appearance at the festival to present his adaptation of Jerzy Kosinski’s controversial 1965 novel The Painted Bird. Following the journey of a young boy in Eastern Europe during World War II, the film depicts the physical and psychological horrors of war with breathtaking, unique visuals.
