Live Music: Hardedge
/ Graham Haynes / Brandon Ross
The music that Graham Haynes, Brandon Ross and Hardedge create explores the inner-workings of sound and synthesis, and is intended for the listener who can appreciate its bold sense of exploration, as well as the surreal beauty of the world it evokes. Dense musical soundscapes, unrestricted freedom of movement, vibrant sonic constructions rich in textural designs, with a structural foundation that's philosophically clear, is what Haynes, Ross, and Hardedge are expressing through their music as a trio and in various other situations.
For this special occasion, Hardedge/Haynes/Ross will be exploring the possibilities through sound to express the dramatic story of Faust, the pinnacle of the silent era, the last German film by F. W. Murnau. The live soundtrack will make an attempt to follow the astonishing photography, its barrage of visceral and apocryphal imagery contrasting with its simple spiritual theme, and the magnificent art direction and special effects which, to this day retain the power to amaze.
The son of famous jazz drummer Roy Haynes, Graham was surrounded by jazz musicians his whole childhood. While his main instrument is the cornet, he is by no means making jazz music these days. He uses technology to create imaginative, subtle sonic environments. Even amidst electronic processing, his horn stands out, providing a level of expression that humanizes and elevates the synthetic sounds. Haynes intermingles compelling, hypnotic horn lines, experimental post-techno rhythms, world music grooves and ambient textures with commendable results.
Haynes has released six albums as a leader, eight as a co-leader with Hardedge, and dozens as a sideman with some of the greatest creative improvised artists.
Sound designer Hardedge’s live-mix delves into the more intellectual elements of dark electronic music. His experimental approach to sound, space, and structure owes a lot to the fundamental principles of the Chicago's A.A.C.M. creative thinkers, especially their revolutionary multi-directional, non-progressive approach, and the use of the silence as a musical element. Paired with Haynes’ unique sensibility, he creates psychedelic-like aural landscapes, made up of polyrhythms and random, transient frequencies. Their music becomes a surrealistic construction that defies the imagination, a stunning chemistry between two uncompromising artists rarely found in today’s art of sound.
Hardedge has released three solo-electronics albums; eight as a co-leader with Graham Haynes; one in a duo setting with Wadada Leo Smith, and two as a partner with Brandon Ross and Doug Wieselman with the trio DarkMatterHalo.
Brandon Ross is a guitarist/composer/arranger/singer/songwriter, who has crafted a personal approach to guitar and improvisation that has taken him all over the world. He leads Brandon Ross & Blazing Beauty, his improvising trio/quartet; ‘For LiViNG Lovers’, his acoustic duo with bassist Stomu Takeishi and co-leads the avant power trio, Harriet Tubman, (with bassist Melvin Gibbs, and drummer JT Lewis). Ross has performed and recorded with Cassandra Wilson, Henry Threadgill, James Carter, Jewel, Tony Williams, Arto Lindsay, Leroy Jenkins, Lawrence D. 'Butch' Morris, Bill Frisell, Me'Shell N'degeocello, Moreno Veloso, Arrested Development, Archie Shepp, Muhal Richard Abrams, Don Byron, Myra Melford, Ron Miles, Kip Hanrahan, Oliver Lake, Wadada Leo Smith, Lizz Wright and many others.
Ross has released 2 recordings of his solo work, "Costume", in 2004, and "Puppet" in 2006, and 3 recordings with Harriet Tubman “I Am A Man’ 1998; “Prototype” 2000; and “Ascension” 2011 all to rave reviews, and several critic's "best of the year" lists.
His acoustic duo, "For Living Lovers", with acoustic bass guitarist, Stomu Takeishi, released their debut CD, "Revealing Essence" in January 2014.
Ross has scored music for [the surviving reel of] the 1923 Chinese silent film "Lotus Blossom" as well as the 2012 documentary film, “Melvin & Jean An American Story” by filmmaker Maia Wechsler.
