CZECH DOCUMENTARY FILMS – MIDDLE EUROPE SERIES

FEBRUARY 17, 7 PM

CZECH CENTER NEW YORK AT THE BOHEMIAN

NATIONAL HALL, 321 EAST 73RD STREET, NYC

The Frontier
(Řimane za humny), 2003, Directed by Zora Cejnkova. The film takes us

into the world of the ancient Romans, on the Limes Romanum, border of the Roman Empire,

following the Danube in the Central European region. For the first time we have the chance

to see the recently-disclosed archaeological localities and Roman relics in the Czech

Republic, Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary.

The film shows that the Danube Basin was one of the most dramatic sectors of the Limes –

the two most powerful civilizations of the Continent were clashing here: Romans and

barbarian German tribes. In English.

Daily I Appear Before Your Face

(Denně předstupuji před tvou tvař), 1992,

Directed by Drahomira Vihanova.

After the “Velvet Revolution” of 1989, a number of previously taboo subjects opened up to

Czech documentary fi lmmaking. One of these was the theme of the post-war resettlement

of the Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia.

The fi lm refl ects one of these few Germans who stayed in Czechoslovakia after the war,

and also refl ects the fate of those who were forced to leave. The director, by describing this

unique fate, in a life permeated with a spirit of reconciliation, attempts to fi nd for herself (and

for the viewer) an answer to the question of the meaning of life.
In Czech with English subtitles.
