Czech Modernism on Film

November 30 – December 11, 2006

Brooklyn Academy of Music, BAM Rose Cinemas

The period of Czech Modernism and beyond is presented in a twelve-film retrospective by BAMcinématek this winter. The rarely screened films from the years 1926-1949 handsomely portray the history of Czechoslovakia from the era between the wars until the Communist takeover in 1948. Among the black-and-white beauties are two films by Gustav Machatý, the silent classic The Kreuzer Sonata (Kreuzerova sonáta, 1926) and the popular From Saturday to Sunday  (Ze soboty na neděli, 1931). Portrayals of strong willed women include the renowned Tonka of the Gallows (Tonka Šibenice, dir. Karel Anton, 1930), Faithless Marijka (Marijka nevěrnice, 1934) directed by Vladislav Vančura, who is better known as a novelist, and Virginity (Panenství, 1937), the feature debut of the doyen of Czech cinema, director Otakar Vávra. Every series must include a comedy and this period could not be represented better than by Heave Ho! (Hej rup!, 1934) directed by Martin Frič with the legendary satiric duo Voskovec & Werich. On a more serious note come films Crisis (Krize, dir. Herbert Kline, 1938) photographed by Sasha Hammid for whom this film was the culprit for his immigration to the United States; the socialist realist piece The Strike (Siréna, dir. Karel Steklý, 1947) based on the novel by Marie Majerová, and The Distant Journey (Daleká cesta, dir. Alfréd Radok, 1949) credited as the first feature film that dealt with the Holocaust in a narrative form of cinema. The two silent films will be presented with live piano accompaniment.

The retrospective is presented by Brooklyn Academy of Music and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, produced and co-curated by Irena Kovářová.
