This twelve-film retrospective examines the period of Czech cinema from the era between the wars until the Communist takeover in 1948. Highlights include two films by the hugely influential Gustav Machatý; portrayals of strong willed women like the renowned Tonka of the Gallows, Faithless Marijka, and Virginity; and great social issue works such as The Strike and The Distant Journey, credited as the first feature film that dealt with the Holocaust.
Produced and co-curated by Irena Kovárová. Co-presented by the Czech Center New York.
