Michael Lahr, Program Director of Elysium, will give a short introduction.

Our Western system of an open, democracy-based society and the values holding up such a system are threatened from many sides. Therefore it seems more important than ever to remind ourselves of the great achievement democracy is, and that it is worth fighting for. This literary collage presents texts of authors and thinkers who, in their time, fought against undermining tendencies of dissolution and the erosion of the republic by totalitarian forces. The cry for simple solutions, the longing for a strong man who liberates us from the complex trap of a globalized world, is growing louder.

After having attended the presentation of “Defending Democracy” at the Center of Tolerance in Vilnius in 2015, a Lithuanian student wrote to Gregorij von Leïtis: “What you are doing is wonderful and it moves people to reflect… The world is changing with every person who is touched, and who starts thinking about the state of affairs. And the world needs change."
