BOOK READING and presentation by translator Alex Zucker with Columbia University Professor Chris Harwood. Petra Hulova: All This Belongs to Me.

All This Belongs to Me, translated from Czech into English by Alex Zucker, was published by Northwestern University Press in 2009. In 2010, Zucker won the National Translation Award, awarded each year by the American Literary Translators Association to the translator "whose work, by virtue of both its quality and significance, has made the most valuable contribution to literary translation."

Petra Hulova
Petra Hulova became an overnight sensation at age 23, when All This Belongs to Me (Pamet moji babicce), her first novel, was published in Czech in 2002. She has since established herself as one of the most exciting young novelists in Europe today. All This Belongs to Me chronicles the lives of three generations of women in a Mongolian family. Narrated from the point of view of a mother, three sisters, and the daughter of one of the sisters, this story of secrets and betrayals takes readers from the daily rhythms of nomadic life on the steppe to the harsh realities of urban alcoholism and prostitution in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar.

Alex Zucker
Alex Zucker's translation of Jachym Topol's first novel, City Sister Silver, was named one of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. His most recent translations include The Opportune Moment, 1855 and Case Closed, both by Patrik Ourednik. He is currently translating Jachym Topol's 2009 novel Chladnou zemi, and will soon begin work on Marketa Lazarova, by Vladislav Vancura, for which he received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
