Director: Emir Kusturica, 1981, 109 mins, Yugoslavia
Regarded as one of his best films, Kusturica won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival for this stylish coming of age story set in 1960‘s Sarajevo. Young Dino grows up in the shadow of his ailing father and is attracted to the world of small time criminals - and to Dolly Bell, a lovely cabaret girl who turns his world upside down.
Kusturica graduated from FAMU in 1978.
In Do You Remember Dolly Bell?, Kusturica lays the foundations for what
would later evolve into his most treasured motifs: roguish characters
from the Balkan demi-monde, farm animals everywhere, and a heady blend
of naïveté, cynicism and absurdity. Yet his first feature is less
carnivalesque or unhinged and more bittersweet than any of his
subsequent films. And at a time when most of his Slavic contemporaries
were taking up strong stances against their socialist masters, Kusturica
adopts an altogether more humanist attitude towards the prevailing

The Famous Firsts film series showcases the debut feature films of preeminent Eastern European directors, all of whom studied at the prestigious FAMU (Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts) in Prague and went on to gain recognition on the world’s stage.
