Festival: Rehearsal for Truth

The 2018 Rehearsal for Truth Theater Festival, the Central European contemporary theater honoring Vaclav Havel, presents four performances in the original languages with English supertitles, followed by talk-backs with the artists and after parties hosted by the countries' cultural institutes and consulates general in New York City.

The program also includes two stage readings and a panel discussion, the Disturbing the Peace award to a courageous writer at risk and a gala event to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia where The Honorable Madeleine Albright will be the evening’s most esteemed honoree.

“We wish only to put on plays that meet certain standards of urgency, that are intellectually penetrating, complex, challenging, and powerful.”

--Vaclav Havel, “The Kind of Theater We Want to Do.”

Artistic Director of the Festival, Pavla Niklova, explains her vision: “While paying homage to Vaclav Havel’s legacy as a playwright, dissident, and political thinker, the selected performances will address current political and social trends in Central Europe and offer New York audiences a rare opportunity to experience the artistic and cultural atmosphere of the region.”

Rehearsal for Truth Theater Festival is organized by Vaclav Havel Library Foundation and BBLA, in partnership with Czech, Hungarian, Polish and Slovak performing arts institutions and cultural institutes to highlight Havel’s legacy as a playwright through live performances, panel discussions, exhibitions and an award ceremony. It seeks to establish exchanges between U.S. and Central European theater professionals. The festival reflects not only Havel’s contribution to 20th century theater but also his belief in the potential of Central European cultural traditions to enrich human existence in the modern age. Rehearsal for Truth Theater Festival is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
