FILM CLUB: Heritage of Communism
God’s Stone Quarry

April 19, 7pm

Bohemian National Hall, 321 East 73rd Street, between 1st & 2nd Avenue.

God’s Stone Quarry (Kamenolom boží, 88min, 2004, dir. Břetislav Rychlík)

The film’s subtitle One Year in North Bohemia places it in time and space. It is a document about searching for happiness in an unhappy place. North Bohemia with its moon-like landscape was a part of the country sentenced to a slow death by spreading strip coalmines and it was the most devastated region during the past 60 years. It was devastated by the WWII, the exodus of Germans, and the industrial senseless expansion of the Communist regime. Meeting a local farmer, a mining engineer, a Satanist rock band and a religious environmentalist tells a different story though – a story of hope that even in the places of seeming emptiness people are able to find reasons to live. That life within us and around us dies out only if we allow it.

Film Club video series is organized in cooperation with Irena Kovářová.
