Lang Recital Hall, Hunter College

East 68th Street at Lexington Ave,

4th Floor

The Red Cedar Trio of Cedar Rapids in Iowa will perform the new work titled Spillville Variations on a Theme of Dvořák, a group-commissioned project of 15 composers based on a musical theme composed by legendary Czech composer Antonín Dvořák during the three months he lived in Spillville, Iowa in 1893. In addition to Spillville Variations, the concert will feature Czech or Czech-inspired music and will also be performed at the National Museum in Prague, in Iowa, and in Washington D.C.  See the Cross Country Calendar for the dates of the other U.S. concerts.

The performance is a part of Czech Musical Exchange, a collaborative project created by Red Cedar Chamber Music and the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids. The New York  performance is organized with the assistance of the Czech Center New York. The concerts in Iowa and Prague will be performed with the Prague-based ensemble Quartetto Telemann.

The concerts of the Czech Musical Exchange project will be called From Starched Shirt Cuffs...A Dvorak Celebration, referring to Dvořák's habit of jotting down musical ideas on his starched cuffs and shirt fronts as he enjoyed his daily walk around Spillville. The centerpiece of these concerts, Spillville Variations on a Theme by Dvořák, was commissioned by Red Cedar Chamber Music for Red Cedar Trio artists Jan Boland (flute), David Miller (viola), and John Dowdall (guitar).

Jan Boland participated in the composition of Spillville Variations on a Theme by Dvorak, arranging the theme from the Scherzo movement of Dvořák's “American” String Quartet in F Major for flute, viola and guitar. Dvořák wrote this Scherzo theme to imitate the chirping Iowa bird, the Scarlet Tanager, which he frequently heard while living in Spillville. Variations on this theme have been added by 14 Iowa composers. The 15th variation was composed by Ivo Medek, director of the Janáček Academy in Brno.
