Film Club: Case for a Rookie Hangman

Case for a Rookie Hangman (Případ pro začínajícího kata), Director: Pavel Juráček, 1970, 102 min.

A short animated film, The Garden by Czech surrealist Jan Švankmajer followed by Pavel Juráček’s drama based on Gulliver's Travels.

The Garden (1968):
Frank visits his friend Josef, who introduces him to his pedigree rabbits and his wife Mary. Frank is more interested in the slightly unsettling fact that Josef and Mary´s garden fence is entirely made up of living people holding hands. Finally, Frank asks Josef how he manages to keep the fence together.

Case for a Rookie Hangman:
In the film, the hero gets lost in his car and ends up in a strange version of the village where he grew up. It is inspired by Swift's third book from Gulliver's Travels. Gulliver comes to the mysterious country Balnibahri after meeting a rabbit with a pocket watch. The inscription on the watch introduces him to this wonderful world, the capital of which, Laputa, floats above the ground. The film resists inclusion in a genre: there are elements of slapstick, surrealism and satire; it is a utopian political film and a fairy-tale at the same time.
Director: Pavel Juráček, 1970, 102 min.
