Ground Floor - Michal Pěchouček

The Czech Center presents an exhibition of mural painting by Michal Pechoucek, laureate of the Jindrich Chalupecky Award 2003. Opening reception Thursday, January 13,:30-8:30 pm, on view through March 14, 2005 at the Czech Center New York.

The Czech Center New York presents acclaimed young Czech artist Michal Pěchouček, laureate of the prestigious Czech National Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2003,  handed to him by former president Václav Havel.

The installation expresses a junction between public and private life, revealing features of a typical Czech apartment during the communist regime. Paradoxically, the walls are decorated with replicas of iconic Czech paintings. These images, comparable to Van Gogh's sunflowers in the Czech Republic, were not freely exhibited during the time of such apartments. Mr. Pěchouček began painting the Czech Center walls just five days before the opening.

Michal Pěchouček is a multi-disciplinary artist. As a graduate from Prague‘s Academy of Fine Art, he is highly skilled in conventional figure painting.  His works today, however, are rarely displayed in traditional gallery settings. They often become props, or narrative storyboards for film.  His live performances are known to be interjected with a tense feeling and a smart knowingness. Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, UK
