I Served the King of England / Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále
dir. Jiří Menzel, 120 min, 2006
Tuesday, August 27, BNH roof opens at 7pm

Part of the Czech New Wave era of the 1960s, Jiří Menzel earned an early reputation as one of the forefathers of modern Czech cinema. His work over the years solidified him a position at the top of the industry along with another top Czech filmmaker of the time, Miloš Forman. With his debut feature film Closely Watched Trains (Ostře sledované vlaky 1966), Menzel won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1967. In 1969, he wrote and directed Larks on a String, (Skřivánci na niti) considered by many to be his best movie. The Czech Film Academy awarded him a Czech Lion for making a significant and lasting impression on Czech film in 1996.

Graceful and leisurely movie, adapted from a novel by Bohumil Hrabal, covering a time span from 1930s, Nazi occupation and the Communist period. The movie begins at the end of the story, in the 1960s when Ditě is released from a Communist prison in Prague after serving almost fifteen years for becoming rich.

Czech That Film, sponsored by Staropramen, is organized by the Czech Center in collaboration with the Consulates General of the Czech Republic in Chicago and Los Angeles in cooperation with the Gene Siskel Film Center and UCLA Film Television.
