In a Different Voice: Women’s Genealogy in Czech Visual Art, from 1918 to the Present

Martina Pachmanova, Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague

The talk examines the role of women in visual arts from the moment when the First Czechoslovak Republic was established till today. First, it will briefly maps the oeuvre of important and unfairly omitted women artists (mainly painters, sculptors) who worked in Czech Republic (part of former Czechoslovakia) during the modernist era. The survey of inter-war women artists will provide a historical background for a more detailed analysis of the work of post-war and contemporary Czech women artists. A special emphasis will be put on those artists who entered the scene after the fall of the Communist regime in 1989, and who unprecedentedly challenged the patriarchal bias in local visual culture, and significantly contributed to the “birth” of gender-oriented art criticism. The main task of the talk is to introduce the work of many remarkable Czech women artists to the American public, and to highlight the role of women’s genealogy in art history. An integral part of the talk will be the power-point and image presentation.
