INTIMATE LIGHTING (1965)

Directors:  Ivan Passer

Run Time: 75 min.

Origin: Czechoslovakia

A music teacher living in a small Czech village learns that his childhood friend, a sucessful musician living in Prague, plans to visit.

Screening introduced by Michal Bregant, General Director of the National Film Archive, Prague, Czech Republic.

A cellist from Prague goes to fulfill a job and visit old friends in a rural village, his glamorous mistress in tow, and together they play music, drink, dine, and indulge in bouts of nostalgia. Passer is interested less in incident here than in the gradual revelation of character, and with the assistance of the great Miroslav Ondricek (cinematographer of Forman's Amadeus and Taking Off), he creates a rueful, beautiful portrait of the fullness of empty leisure hours, against a bucolic backdrop.
