Jazz World Photo 2016
The traveling exhibition of the Jazz World Photo 2016 third year’s competition contains the 30 best pictures from various authors worldwide. The author of the winning photograph was, for the first time in the history of the competition, a woman – Marion Tisserand, a photographer from Lyon, France. The second place winner was Seung Yull Nah from Seoul, South Korea, and Ariele Monti from Forli, Italy, won third place.
Every picture of the exhibition is unique and original – as is jazz music. They range from ethereal images focusing on the depths of the soul to moments of absolute ecstasy. Their various styles, approaches and techniques are intertwined with the love of jazz music and its vast creative contribution.
This year, the JWF competition saw a record number of submissions from 220 photographers from 34 countries. The largest number of participants was from Italy, followed by the Czech Republic, France, Poland, Spain, the USA and the Russian Federation. In addition, there were competitors from less frequent contributing countries such as Malaysia, Venezuela, Chile, Georgia, Australia and Israel. A large number of contributors – almost 20% – were women.
“When we select and evaluate images, we do not know the name of the artist, their country or gender. We merely evaluate their creation. Therefore I was quite pleased to find out that the winner was a woman, and that the exhibition shows several more great images from women. The photographic camera stopped being a male domain a long time ago.” – said the Jury Chair Ivan Prokop.
Jazz World Photo is an international photography competition founded in the Czech Republic in 2014 by photographer Patrick Marek, promoter and musician Tomas Katschner and photographer Ivan Prokop. Winners are selected anonymously by an independent international jury and receive their prizes during the finale of the JAZZINEC festival in Trutnov.
