Juraj Filas: Oratio Spei (Requiem)

CONCERT at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, NYC

“Oratio Spei” –  By Czech Composer Juraj Filas –  U.S. Premiere Ten Years After the Fall of the WTC in NY

Ten years after the tragic September 11th terrorist attack on the World Trade Center towers in New York City,  “Oratio Spei” (prayer of hope)  - dedicated to the innocent victims of terrorism -  will be premiered in New York City on Sept. 14th “Oratio Spei is based on the traditional,  deeply  emotional text of the Latin Mass for the deceased which ask for forgiveness as they depart this world.

“Oratio Spei” concludes with the most important message of the New Testament : “I am Alpha and Omega, Resurrection and Life; whoever believes in Me, will live forever” –a  message which  turns sorrow and despair into hope.

With “Oratio Spei” Filas expresses his deep desire that that the positive forces of reason and humanity will triumph over  war and  destruction .

Juraj Filas is considered to be one of the Czech Republic’s most important contemporary composers . His work so far includes more than 90 compositions: Symphonies, Kantatas, Chamber  Music,  the requiem “Oratio Spei”  and, more recently, an Opera.  He is an Associate Professor of the Music Faculty of the Academy of Music in Prague

The U.S. premiere of “Oratio Spei” will be performed by the chorus and orchestra of Sacred Music in a Sacred Place under the direction of Kent Tritle at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola. Maestro Tritle has been described by a New York Times music critique as “the brightest star in New York’s choral music world”

This performance is made possible in part with support from the Harmony Foundation, Inc.
