SYNOPSIS

Slawomir Szczepan (played by Tomasz Zygadlo), a young theater director from Warsaw, arrives in a small Polish town to put on the play Liberation by Stanisław Wyspiański with a modern flare. There he clashes with the aging lead actor Krzysztof (Tadeusz Huk), who sees it as a chance to make a once-in-a-lifetime performance.

Soon Krzysztof becomes overbearing with his many ideas about his role, while his wife, Anka (Halina Labonarska), struggles with her waning theater career. These frustrations and quirks carry over into the couple's home, where Krzysztof and Anka regularly spar with one another.

Acclaimed independent & Hollywood director Agnieszka Holland made her solo debut with this ambitious ensemble film. The story of a trendy young theatre director attempting a politically controversial reinterpretation of a well-known Polish play provides both an allegorical study of cultural interference and a portrait of a withering marriage.
