Katerina Kyselica: Quietly, In My Mind
The exhibition "Quietly, In My Mind" presents recent works by Czech-American artist, printmaker and designer Katerina Kyselica. Mixed media, collages, etchings and artist books feature playful explorations of form and texture.
Tuesday, April 5, 6:30 – 8:30 PM
A walk-through the exhibition with the artist at 6:30 PM
The presented works include a series of monochromatic, geometric compositions and collages created by reprinting one single etching plate with a densely handwritten text – Kyselica’s journal entry. This one single plate generated numerous tactile impressions used in “Untitled (Squares)” (2015), “In My Mind” (2014) and “Slowly and Quietly" (2016). The works exemplify the artist’s interest in controlled randomness throughout the process of creation, whether it is the position of individual elements in a composition or a subtle variation in their texture.
Text, handwritten or cut out from newspapers and magazines, appears throughout the exhibited works, including Kyselica’s recent collages entitled “Etudes" (2015). These small works on paper, an exercise as the title suggests, are centered on an irregular composition of small squares embossed into the paper. It acts as a structure for the artist to further play with hand-made paper and typography. In the series of mixed media works entitled “Fatal Charms" (2014) and artist books “Code Red” (2014) and “American Colonies” (2016), text is used both contextually and for its visual qualities. Kyselica searches for old books with a title that introduces a theme for the work. By transforming the book’s pages into a collage, she re-invents the original story and re-purposes the book.
A motif that re-appears in Kyselica’s work is that of a house. The motif gains on urgency through the repetition of design, which creates a pattern with a woven-in narrative that questions individual’s freedom in the realm of role-playing and imposed expectations. The series of hand-colored etchings entitled “Ten Degrees to Gold” and etchings “Sharpsburg Ln” are on view.
