Listen to the musical excerpt from the “La Gran Aventura” on the Czech Center Youtube channel and we invite all musical enthusiasts to keep their calendar free for February 2021, when the violin concerto will have its world premiere at the Bohemian National Hall, featuring Mark Berman and Gabriela Demeterova.

Mark Berman’s Violin Concerto “La Gran Aventura” is inspired by a long list of life experiences, music, art and travel that Mark has experienced throughout his life. This abbreviated list includes but is not limited to: Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Dvořák’s New World Symphony, Picasso, Chick Corea, Stravinsky, André Previn, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, running, practicing piano, Paris in the early 20th century, writing, talking with and meeting people, travel, and more...

The concerto starts off with a declaration. This E minor section is firmly stated by the piano/orchestra. It builds and leads to the violin’s first entrance. We start slow but it has a long build leading to the beginning of our adventure. Come with us as our first stop is the southern coast of Spain. We travel on from there around this planet on a grand and beautiful worldwide adventure, all through the mystery of music!

Gabriela Demeterova, one of the leading world-class solo violinists and violists, was born in Prague, Czech Republic. She started to play the violin at the age of three and gave her first public performance at the age of five. Thanks to her profound classical music background, including her grandfather violinist Hynek Wolf, who studied chamber music with composer Leoš Janáček and premiered his famous violin sonata in Brno Conservatoire, in Gabriela’s genes circulates the best of the famous Czech classical music tradition of Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Josef Suk, and most particularly, Leoš Janáček, whose clear vision of the interpretation of his music and his violin sonata has been passed on to Gabriela personally by her grandfather.

Gabriela is based in the UK, living in the lovely county of Shropshire. She performs on British concert stages. In 2018, she had successful recitals in London, one of them titled “Dvořák & others.” She was a guest of Jim Hawkins in the cool seat at BBC Radio Shropshire. In 2019, her performance and masterclass at the RNCM Manchester was received with great reviews. In 2019, she launched her new project “House Concert with Gabriela”, a series of exclusive livestreamed performances for the Patreon membership audience on her Patreon.
