Leopold Bauer and the other tradition of modern architecture

Lecture by Jindřich Vybíral

April 7, 6:30 pm

Czech Center New York

Leopold Bauer (1872-1938) is the sort of figure that, until recently, seemed out of place in the history of modern architecture. At the beginning of his career, he was one of the stars of modern architecture in Central Europe.

Later however, Bauer rejected his roots and switched to a position of new historicism. The aim of the lecture is to analyze the reasons that led to his about-face and to interpret the function of “style” in his mature work.

Organized in cooperation with New York University’s Department of Art History.
