Documentary film about iconic Czech singer and dissident Marta Kubišová. Winner of Audience Award at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The Magic Voice of a Rebel (Magický hlas rebelky), dir. Olga Sommerová, 2014, 90 mins.

Documentary Film about iconic Czech singer and dissident Marta Kubišová. In the late 1960’s, at the height of the Prague Spring she was one of Czechoslovakia’s greatest singing talents. This movie by Olga Sommerová traces her journey from humble beginnings to the Prague Spring, oppression under the Soviet normalization and her eventual Velvet Revolution come back.

TRAILER

When the Soviet tanks rolled into Prague her ballad, ‘A prayer for Marta’ became a national symbol of resistance. The soviet authorities were concerned by her popularity and banned her from performing in public as well as tarnishing her image. She remained in Czechoslovakia and became a counterculture icon and then spokesperson for Charter 77, the human rights movement that stood up against the oppressive regime.

Some of the most powerful moments of the film come from the archive interviews with Václav Havel who worked with her during this time.

In 1989, she sang ‘Modlitba pro Martu’ and the Czechoslovak national anthem at Wenceslas Square at the height of the Velvet Revolution.

Her dramatic personal life is intertwined with the political tragedy. The film explores her career, private life, civic engagement as well as the history of Czechoslovakia in the 2nd half of the 20th Century.
