Marketa Lazarová
Film Marketa Lazarova, (1967, 180 min, in Czech with English subtitles). Directed by František Vlačil. Set in 13th century Bohemia, this epic of rival clans has been equally praised for its historical accuracy and its elemental, poetic imagery. A portrait of Europe at the crossroads of paganism and Christianity told with a dazzling visual sensibility that suggested Kurosawa and Bergman.
