MetOpera: Rusalka Stream

Free Nightly Opera Streams continue with a week of screenings that includes some of the biggest hits of recent seasons. The Metropolitan Opera has Rusalka on the schedule for Monday, April 13.

Monday, April 13 – Dvořák’s Rusalka
Starting at 7:30PM and it's available for 23 hours afterwards.

Conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin; starring Renée Fleming, Emily Magee, Dolora Zajick, Piotr Beczala, John Relyea.

A cornerstone of Czech opera, Dvořák’s dark and melodious take on the old Slavic yarn about a water nymph who falls in love with a human entered the repertoire in 1901. In recent decades, it has become a staple for lyric sopranos, who relish the title role’s spellbinding Song to the Moon in the first act—although the greatest challenge might be the nymph’s silent second act, after the love-struck Rusalka trades her voice to a scenery-chewing witch for the chance to become human.

Otto Schenk’s storybook production perfectly captures the fairy-tale world of Dvořák’s supremely romantic opera. Star soprano Renée Fleming, in one of her most acclaimed portrayals, takes on the title role of the water nymph who longs to be human, opposite Piotr Beczała as the Prince, the object of her affection. John Relyea is the Water Gnome, Dolora Zajick sings the witch Ježibaba, and Emily Magee is the Foreign Princess. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts.

Song to Rusalka

As he prepared to take the podium for the 2014 revival of Dvořák’s Rusalka, Yannick Nézet-Séguin spoke to the Met’s Matt Dobkin about why he “loves every bar of this score.”
