BITTER COFFEE (Silný kafe)
Dir. Börkur Gunnarsson, 85 min, 2004, 35mm, color
In Czech with English subtitles.
Prague may have been a place where Americans flocked in the early 1990s. That wave has left but many foreigners followed. Including director Gunnarsson who hails from Iceland and ended up studying film at the Prague Film Academy. Together with a multilingual cast (Croatian, Finnish, Icelandic and Czech) he shot his feature debut on a minimal budget using partial improvisation. The resulting dialogues of the two bickering couples at the center of this film are as if coming from a real life. A short summer trip of two Prague couples (a Croatian actor and his Finnish girlfriend and a Czech couple of a starting actress and a self-described cynic, budding film director) becomes an adventure, involving arguments and high emotions which eventually cause stormy and irreversible changes in both couples’ relationships. The majority of scenes in the film were shot concurrently using three digital cameras with five versions emerging in the cutting room; the most compact of these was chosen for the final version.
