Jan Balabán has lived in Ostrava since his childhood. Prose writer, journalist and translator, he translated works by H. P. Lovecraft and Terry Eagleton. He is the publisher of the literary magazine Obracená strana měsíce (The dark side of the moon). Balabán is the author of two novels: Černý beran (The Black Ram, 2000) and Kudy šel anděl (By where the Angel passed, 2003), and four short story collections: Středověk (The Middle Ages, 1995), Boží lano (God’s Rope), Prázdniny (Holidays,

1998), Možna, že odchazime (Now We’re Leaving, 2004). Jan Balabán was awarded with the Magnesia Litera Prize.
