Rooftop Ciné-Concerts Series: May Fairy Tale

The Czech Center 2015 ROOFTOP CINÉ-CONCERT SERIES hosts its penultimate concert and film collaboration on Tuesday 18 August. This week features Opera Lafayette Orchestra cellist, Nancy Jo Snider and the 1926 film, May Fairy Tale | Pohádka máje.
These Tuesday evening summer events start off with welcome cocktails at 7pm followed by a 30-minute concert by our guest musician. Once the sun goes down over the New York skyline we show the featured silent film accompanied by beautiful improvised classical music.
Nancy Jo Snider is the director of the Music program at American University. She is active as a performer, educator and administrator in the Washington, DC area. Nancy has performed across the world and some highlights include performances with Trisha Yearwood, Mirenka Cechova, Modern Musick, Verge Ensemble, Shakespeare Theatre, Washington Ballet and was a core member of the Baltimore Opera Orchestra.
After her opening concert, she will accompany the silent film, May Fairy Tale, once the sun has set. This film is another in the ‘Fallen Women’ series curated by Margaret “Peggy” Parsons, Head of the Film Program at the National Gallery of Art.
This 1940 Czech Silent film is about Risa, a law student, who neglects his studies in favor of parties and pranks. His father refuses to continue helping him out of his debts so he goes to stay with his uncle, a priest, living in Moravia, to prepare for his exams. He meets Helenka, the timid daughter of the local gamekeeper, at a village ball and is enchanted by her. But slowly the idyllic relationship negins to tire Risa. Directed by Karel Anton.
