Rooftop Ciné-Concerts Series: A Woman of Affairs
Live music: Henry Grimes, upright bass; Brandon Ross, banjo
The Czech Center 2015 ROOFTOP CINÉ-CONCERT SERIES kicks off its August season with a delightful duo and the film, A Woman of Affairs. Every Tuesday through July the Czech Center played host to some of the most astounding musicians of out time who thrilled us with their 30 minute concerts and later, as the sun went down, they accompanied the silent films with our ‘Fallen Women’ thematic. The rooftop was transformed into an exclusive 1920’s speakeasy where only 75 people could experience each little miracle. Throughout August we will continue to bring you these Tuesday night collaborations for your pleasure.
first CINÉ-CONCERT for this month is on the 4 August. We are really honored to
host living jazz legend, Henry Grimes on bass joined by his long time musical
collaborator, Brandon Ross on banjo. Henry
Grimes is a progenitor and architect of the music known as 'free jazz'.
He has collaborated on over 90 recordings with some of the greatest legends of
the music, from the '50s and '60s until today, alongside Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Coleman
Hawkins, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Cecil
Taylor, McCoy Tyner,..
He has played nearly 600 concerts in 30 countries since he made his astonishing return to music in 2003 after a 35 year absence."
Brandon Ross is a guitarist/composer/singer/songwriter who has worked/recorded with many greats including Cassandra Wilson, Jewel, The Lounge Lizards, Arrested Development, Henry Threadgill and many others. His unique approach to guitar and improvisation has taken him all over the world. He co-leads the avant power trio, Harriet Tubman and also has an acoustic based quartet, Blazing Beauty and leads, the all-acoustic duo, For Living Lovers.
We will have the incredible opportunity to see these two sensational musicians in concert at 8pm. Welcome cocktails are served from 7pm. Once the sun has set dramatically over the city we will hear these two accompany the 1928 silent film, A Woman of Affairs. (98mins) The most complete version of this American film was discovered at the Czech film archive in Prague.
This film was directed by Clarence Brown and stars the powerful Greta Garbo as Diana. She and two childhood friends, Neville (John Gilbert) and David (Johnny Mack Brown) are caught in a love triangle as adults. Diana and Neville have long been smitten with each other, but her father disapproves of the relationship, resulting in her eventual marriage to David. It’s not long after their wedding, however, that tragedy strikes, sending Diana on a downward spiral. When Neville reappears in her life, will he be able to save her from her own misery?
