Abstract:
The Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (FZU) is the biggest institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences founded 65 years ago. The current scientific programme of the institute includes elementary particle physics, physics of condensed substances and materials, solid states physics, and classical and quantum optics. The research is largely conducted as part of extensive international collaborations and bilateral collaborations a number of which are in the USA (e.g. Fermilab, Brookhavaven National Laboratory, Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and others). The research conducted at the FZU exceeds the boundaries of human knowledge and creates opportunities for better life.

The lecture with a presentation will be focused on the introduction of the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Emphasis will be put on actual examples of how society can benefit from the results the FZU scientific research, on the most up-to-date research directions, current collaboration with US institutions and other opportunities of collaboration. The lecture will also deal with the need for targeted building of the positive image of scientific institutions among the general public, stakeholders, other research institutions and political representation at national and international levels.

Presenter:
Ivo Svejkovský is the Head of International Cooperation at the FZU. He has long-term experience in issues of international scientific cooperation, science communication and building of imaginary bridges between scientific institutions, the public, industry and politics. His free time is devoted to his family, art, sport and travelling combined with hiking. He is a big fan of national parks in the USA and of American culture.

Ivo received a Ph.D. degree in the area of corporate identity of research institutions from the University of Economics in Prague and a MBA from the International School of Management. Part of the Science Café series

Science Café is a new series of popular science presentations and talks by the best Czech scientists of today presented by the Czech Center New York. Inspired by the phenomenon of Cafe Scientifique which was first established in the UK in 1998 and spread across the world as a place where anyone could come to discuss the latest ideas in science and technology over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, Science Café is an informal forum for the discussion of current work and interesting scientific issues.

Come and mingle with people with different interests while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea. An informal presentation from the speaker introducing the topic will be followed by a discussion where everyone will have an opportunity to ask questions.
