"Series Matter: Mushrooms," an exhibition by Monika Abbott

Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center in the Bronx, presents “Series Matter: Mushrooms,” an exhibition by Monika Abbott, who has been inspired by childhood memories of mushroom gathering in the Czech Republic.

“Childhood impressions of wandering through spruce woods, most often in the company of grandparents, and of discovering mushrooms—mysterious growing natural shapes, beautiful and bizarre, aesthetically compelling, sometimes edible, sometimes fatal—constitute the first contact of Czech children with Nature and the Cosmos. The gathering of mushrooms is a national passion, and is part of the formative experience of each and every Czech. The feeling of admiration, mystery, and amazement at the infinite diversity, and at the same time the unity of form, keeps returning every time when I hold a mushroom in my hand. And thus it must have been preordained that I, a Czech émigré, would step out of my adult home in the Connecticut countryside and find the mushroom Bolete, which I felt immediately compelled to bring to my studio,” says the artist.

Monika Abbott uses mushrooms as her subject in a new series dedicated to matter. After collecting these beautiful and strangely formed specimens from the woods of Connecticut, Abbott layers their intricate structures on two sides of mylar. Her paintings become an intriguing labyrinthine image, capturing both the uniqueness of each individual mushroom and its spongy, fungal texture. Abbott hopes that through this series she is “creating islands of clarity, order, and comprehensibility within the surrounding chaos of today’s world.”

Monika Abbott was born in 1948 in Prague. In 1975 she emigrated to Holland where she began to study drawing and painting. Three years later, she exhibited her first paintings. In 1985 Abbott came to the United States to study at Parsons Institute, and she has been showing her works ever since. She has exhibited at the Kuks Castle in the Czech Republic; International Images in Pittsburgh; and the Artsforum Gallery and the Metropolitan Museum Staff Show in New York.
