New York, Silent Loneliness in the Middle of Chaos
An exhibition of photographs by Slovak artist Martin Kallay entitled “New York, Silent Loneliness in the Middle of Chaos.” Pierluigi Solieri on Martin Kallay’s work: New York - an iconic metropolis of modernity, a stratigraphy of times - past, present and future - all blended in a disorderly and casual manner, a melting pot of forms and structures, fascinating and unique. And then there are its people, who stand out as if frozen in their essence, appearing suddenly on the scene. People of whom we know nothing - not the name, origin, or the story they could tell. They are all parts of a living representation of a Theater stage that opens and closes its curtain every day. It is the capital of the American dream.
This is the backdrop on which Martin Kallay builds New York’s "comedy" of emotions, lights and colors. And here they, the figurines of his game, joke and play together with references, reflections, similarities but also their differences, interact sometimes with proportion and balance, other times with more syncopated rhythm, creating confusion and instability. In his reading of the city, Kallay plays with shapes and colors, in order to let the city manifest itself with its own peculiarities, and searches here for the purity of lines. What results is a mixture of opposing feelings and concepts that create a healthy confusion in an observer. It is a kind of initiatory path where the Big Apple, the archetype of modernity and human utopia, reveals its soul which is not made of concrete, blood and meat, but of ideas, suggestions, and contrasts: tangible and intangible realities, peace and turmoil, chaos and order.
The photographs Kallay exhibits in large format show focus on the order of internal forms, while being very clear about the principles of stylistic purity and image building. The result of a studied and calm hold of the author is New York is a living, loving and scrutinized protagonist.
