STORIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY

Lecture and presentation of the civic association Post Bellum

Monday, February 25, 7 pm
Czech Center New York,
1109 Madison Avenue @ 83rd Street, NYC

Since 2002, a group of journalists, historians and students from the civic association Post Bellum have managed to collect over 750 testimonies of the stories of survivors who were persecuted for their beliefs, their ethnic membership, and the courage to resist the totalitarian regimes in the former Czechoslovakia. With the upcoming anniversary of the communist coup d'etat in 1948, Post Bellum has mainly concentrated on recording the testimonies of the people held prisoners in the communist camps and penitentiaries. The unknown or forgotten life stories of the Czechoslovaks in gulag - priests, nuns, soldiers, dissidents, intellectuals and many others are then being processed and finally, via all kinds of media, presented to the public. By publishing these stories, Post Bellum tries to remind the merits of these people in guarding the democratic values at a time when most people were not able of such a stance.
You will be able learn more about the activities of Post Bellum at this event.

Reception with wine and Czech beer after the presentation.
