The 50th New York Film Festival
The Film Society of Lincoln Center presents the 50th New York Film Festival, taking place from September 28th to October 14th. This exciting anniversary will feature fearless new films and illuminating documentaries that challenge and expand preconceived notions of cinematic art.
This year, the New York Film Festival will be presenting
seventeen days of world premieres, prize-winners from Cannes, Berlin, and
Venice Film Festivals, special retrospective screenings, restorations, live
performances, panel discussions, and more! In celebration of this milestone
event, we are thrilled to pay special tribute to Academy Award-winning actress
Nicole Kidman and the Film Society’s Program Director, Richard Peña.
Part of the festival lineup this year will be:
Old Czech Legends (Staré povesti ceske) - part of the festival’s Masterworks series, a series of some of the most celebrated films from cinema’s past that have been revived to be appreciated and experienced on the big screen. Six classic Czech folktales come to life in the brilliant puppet animation of Jiří Trnka, who would have turned 100 this year.
Old Czech Legends will be screened on Saturday, October 13th at 11:00am in the Francesca Beale Theater.
The second piece, Punk in Africa, is fascinating chronicle of the explosion of punk rock in 1970s South Africa, where it became a second front in the burgeoning war against Apartheid. It is directed by Keith Jones and Deon Maas, and is part of our On the Arts series, where music, opera, theater, and magic are captured on screen in films that reflect on other performing arts through the prism of cinema.
Punk in Africa will be screened on Wednesday, October 3rd at 9:00pm in the Francesca Beale Theater.
Tickets can be purchased online and in person at the Alice Tully Hall box office.
