THE FIREMEN'S BALL (1967)

Directors: Miloš Forman

Run Time: 70 min.

Origin: Czechoslovakia

A brilliant satire of a fire brigade's disastrous shindig critiques communism's failings.

Screening introduced by Michal Bregant, General Director of the National Film Archive, Prague, Czech Republic.

The last film that Forman made in his home country, The Firemen's Ball is a tour de force of subversive comic chaos set at a firemen's ball organized (or, rather, disorganized) by elderly authorities who are seen, not without affection, bungling every aspect of the event. Like Intimate Lighting, one of the crucial works of Eastern European cinema of the 1960s.
