The Global Crisis - A Crisis of Solidarity?
PANEL DISCUSSION. The Austrian Cultural Forum and Demos, in cooperation with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the Romanian Cultural Institute, are pleased to present a panel discussion with former Austrian Federal Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer, eminent scholar Benjamin Barber and French Associate Professor of Finance Thomas Philippon on the current global crisis. The event will be moderated by Corina Suteu.
The world financial crisis of 2007/2008 is being followed by a sovereign debt crisis. While we are still discussing its mostly economic reasons and solutions, it can also be interpreted as a political, societal, and philosophical crisis. Ever since its outbreak social unrest has sparked and the ideological foundations of neoliberal economic thinking have been challenged. Protest movements like “Occupy Wall Street”, which arose and spread to the whole world in a matter of weeks, are demanding the end of a system where the richest seem to get richer and the middle classes seem to get poorer. Today´s global crisis requires new political solutions in terms of welfare, equality of chances, and environmental survival.
The topic of this high-caliber discussion will be not just political: can the welfare state survive? To what extent does the free market economy still provide sustainable solutions and chances for a global society? Philosophical and anthropological concepts that we have used and not questioned over the last decades must also be re-assessed. Can we still operate with ideas such as the general equilibrium and rational behavior? And: What does solidarity mean in the US and in Europe?
Alfred Gusenbauer, former Chancellor of Austria and Vice president of the Socialist International, is currently a member of the Honorary Council at the Institute for Global Law and Policy at Harvard Law School.
Benjamin R. Barber is a political theorist and Distinguished Senior Fellow at Demos.
