Fast forward to the end of the Communist regime with a film-manifesto from another generation. Presenting a variety of approaches in five episodes from five different fringe theater groups, the film captures the atmosphere of the post Perestroika/Glasnost era of the late 1980s. The grip of the political system at the time was loosening, and the daring of the writers and performers is extreme and unimaginable in the preceding decades. The satirical tone is established right off the bat with Dr. Milan Šteindler, CSc. and his introduction to each episode. His delivery is part Gustav Husák, part Miloš Jakeš, but also entirely Šteindler. Even the movement/art theater pieces employ a humorous approach, for instance in their inventive costume design. What is truly remarkable is the final episode, a parody of the political pamphlet films of the 1950s, the era of socialist realism, complete with authentic speech antics of the actors of the time.

Jonathan Owen, a Toronto-based British scholar and film critic of great knowledge of Central European cinema, will offer his take on the comedy and the entire series in the post-screening ZOOM discussion, hosted by film programmer Irena Kovarova.

This event is part of the LIGHT STREAMING film series. Check out the other featured film screenings and Q&A’s taking place from April 23 to May 14 every Thursday HERE.
